BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After dropping the first two sets, the Indiana volleyball team charged back to win set three, but lost a close fourth-set to fall 3-1 against Michigan State (17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 21-25) in their Big Ten opener on Friday at University Gym.
Junior Amelia Anderson led the Hoosiers (9-4, 0-1) with 11 kills and junior libero Courtney Harnish registered 19 digs in the match.
Sophomore Megan Tallman tallied 29 assists to move into 11th on the Hoosiers career list with 1,256.
After dropping the first two sets in the match, the Hoosiers found positive momentum in the third set. The Hoosiers had five players record kills in the third set, led by sophomore Taylor Lebo, who had four kills on six swings.
With the Hoosiers trailing 14-15 in set three, Tallman got a kill to start what would be a 9-1 run, capped off by a block by sophomore Jazzmine McDonald and senior Morgan Leach to put the Hoosiers up 22-16. Despite Michigan State cutting the Hoosiers lead to two at 23-21, IU kept its composure and finished off the set with a Lebo kill to win it 25-22.
In set four, Tallman spead the ball around as well with seven players recording a kill for the set. It was Michigan State that got out to the quick start in the fourth set, going up 7-2. With the Hoosiers trailing 12-6 they went on a spurt that turned into a 9-3 scoring run to tie the set 15-15 on a Lebo kill.
The Hoosiers would go up 16-15 on a Michigan State attack error, but that was their only lead of the set, as the Spartans got two quick points to go up 17-16 and extended the lead to 23-20. Lebo got a final kill to bring the Hoosiers within three at 24-21, but it was a Lebo attack error that ended the set and the match.
The Hoosiers are back in action tomorrow as they host Michigan at 7:00 p.m. at University Gym.
