BLOOMINGTON, Ind.. -- The Indiana Women's Soccer (5-7, 1-5 Big Ten) got an early goal from Kayla Smith but it would be Minnesota (6-5, 3-2 Big Ten) that scored once in the second half and once in the second overtime period to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 loss at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
"I thought we had the fight today, even though everyone is a little tired in Sunday games," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "But we have to grind these games out. I'm looking for our older players to step up in these situations. We are getting great contributions and effort from Kayla Smith and Mykayla Brown up top, but we just need more people to join them."
Indiana broke into the scoring column first when Jessie Bujouves sent a crossing pass into the box and the Minnesota defender attempted to settle the ball. As she attempted to do that, Kayla Smith ran in front of her and stole the ball from her and scored her second goal of the season. For Bujouves, it is her first assist of the year.
The Hoosiers continued to threaten the Minnesota goal after taking the lead, with Tori Keller and Bujouves getting shots blocked by Golden Gopher defenders.
As the second half started, it was Minnesota that came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency and put pressure on the IU defenders and goalkeeper Sarah Stone. But each time, the Hoosiers were up to the task and turned away the Gophers.
"I think (Minnesota) came out with a lot more passion to start the second half," Abby Smith said. "It took us a little while to get our feet under us, but when we did, we were right there with them creating chances. We just got a little unlucky at the end today."
However, in the 75th minute, Ashley Pafko lofted a ball on goal from 30 yards out on the right side. Initially it appeared to be going over the goal but as it curled towards the back post, it caught the bottom of crossbar and bounced across the goal line to tie the game at 1-1.
Indiana went back on the attack looking for the go-ahead goal in regulation, and Minnesota tried to help that cause with a misplay in the defensive third. That led to Smith and Mykayla Brown getting in on goal but Brown's shot with a Minnesota defender closing from behind went wide left. The Hoosiers added a couple more shots in the final five minutes but did not find the back of the net, so the teams went to overtime.
In the first overtime period, both teams managed just one shot, but Indiana nearly found the back of the net as she was put in behind the Minnesota defenders on pass by Abby Smith. She beat the diving keeper to the ball but the keeper was able to deflect away just enough before Woolums was able to get a shot off.
The second overtime session again saw IU carry possession but were whistled for a foul 35 yards out on the right side with five minutes left in the game. On the ensuing free kick by Minnesota, Stone came out to punch the ball away but collided with her teammate. The ball bounced free in the box and Olivia Schultz got her foot on it and put it in the goal to give Indiana a loss in its seventh one-goal game of the season and third in a row.
Indiana will return to Big Ten play next week with a roadtrip to Rutgers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
