Oakes Named B1G Special Teams Player of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana redshirt freshman kicker Griffin Oakes collected Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. Oakes is the first Hoosier to pick up the league's special teams award since kicker Mitch Ewald on Oct. 21, 2013.
The Greenwood, Ind., native is the second Hoosier is as many weeks to be recognized by the Big Ten. True freshman linebacker Tegray Scales earned Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week honors after the team's 31-27 victory over No. 18 Missouri.
In his first start, Oakes hit his first three field goal attempts from 38, 48 and 58 yards. The 58-yarder set an IU record, breaking Scott Bonnell's mark of 55 (at Michigan on Oct. 28, 1989). It is tied for the 10th-longest field goal in conference history and is the league's longest since 2009.
His three field goals are tied for the seventh-most in program history and he is the first Hoosier with three in a game since Ewald (at Penn State on Nov. 17, 2012). Oakes also recorded three touchbacks on three kickoffs.
Indiana (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) wraps up its non-conference slate with North Texas (2-2, 0-1 C-USA) on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. EDT at Memorial Stadium (52,929; FieldTurf) and BTN will broadcast the game.
