Field Hockey Set to Open Home Play This Weekend

The Indiana field hockey is set to open its home schedule this weekend, hosting California on Friday and UC Davis on Sunday. The Hoosiers kicked off the season last weekend in Louisville, going 2-0 against New Hampshire and St. Louis.
Last Time Out
The Hoosiers kicked off the 2014 season with two victories in Louisville. On Friday, the Hoosiers came from behind to defeat New Hampshire, 3-2. On Saturday, four different Hoosiers scored a goal as Indiana shutout St. Louis, 6-0. Heilman recorded six goals and an assist in the first two games, while Sydney Supica, Rachel Stauffer and Maddie Latino scored their first goals of the year on Saturday. Latino’s score also marked her first career goal.
California Competition
California opened its season with a pair of overtime matches. The Golden Bears defeated Fairfield, 2-1, led by a two-goal game by freshman Alie Zimmer to open the year. California fell to #18-ranked Delaware, 3-2 to close out the weekend.
Friday marks the ninth matchup for the Hoosiers and Golden Bears. The teams have split the series, 4-4. The last matchup between the two squads resulted in a triple overtime victory for the Hoosiers.
Against the Aggies
UC Davis also opened its 2014 campaign against Fairfield last weekend. The Aggies fell to Fairfield in the final minutes of the game, 2-1. UC Davis will take on Missouri State and St. Louis before making its way to Bloomington on Sunday.
This is the third matchup in program history between Indiana and UC Davis. The Hoosiers are 2-0 agains the Aggies, with the last meeting in 2011 resulting in a 4-1 victory for Indiana.
Hat Trick Heilman Senior Audra Heilman recorded two hat tricks in Indiana’s victories over the week. This is the first time in program history hat tricks have been scored in back-to-back contests. It is also only the second time in history that a Hoosier has recorded three career hat tricks, with the first being Lydia Schrott. Heilman also scored three goals last season against Saint Louis.
More Heilman Honors
For her efforts over the weekend, Heilman was recognized by the Big Ten as the Offensive Player of the Week. This is the third time she has received this honor – she was also selected twice in 2013.
Six Pick Up Sticks
Six new Hoosiers will make their home debut on Friday, Freshmen Glenne Carter (California), Cameron Gibson (Virginia), Maddie Latino (Kentucky), Marcia Lewis (California), Taylor Pearson (Canada) and Abby Urbanek (Illinois) are suiting up for the Hoosiers this fall.
California Connection
Four players on Indiana’s roster hail from the Golden State, including sophomore and Davis, Calif. native Malia Fujisawa. In addition, senior Corinne Karch (San Diego), and freshmen Marcia Lewis (Los Gatos) and Glenne Carter (Los Angeles) call California home.
Oh Captain, My Captain
Seniors Maggie Olson and Audra Heilman are both serving as team captains for the second consecutive year.
