Indiana Tops Tennessee Tech at Indiana Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams topped Tennessee Tech to begin the 2014 season at the Indiana Open on Saturday morning. The Hoosiers swept the scoring in both races taking the top five spots to defeat the Golden Eagles on the IU Championship Cross Country Course. With the clean sweep, both squads scored 15 team points.
In the women’s 5K race, IU’s Amanda Behnke took first place in a time of 18:27.8. She was followed in third place overall (second in team scoring) by Brittany Neeley who clocked in at 18:32.4. Also scoring for Indiana were Chanli Mundy (fourth overall, 18:36.5), Bethany Neeley (fifth overall, 18:38.3) and Madison Stenger (seventh overall, 18:50.2). Syndey Lesko (ninth, 19:11.4) and Corinne Cominator (10th, 19:13.4) were part of Indiana’s top seven finishers.
Indiana’s Kieran Reilly took first place in the men’s 8K run in a time of 25:43.6. He was followed by Evan Esselink in second place as he finished the course in 25:44.4. Taking third and clocking in at 25:48.8 was IU’s Nolan Fife as teammate Kyle DuVall was right on his heels coming in fourth at 25:49.2. The final scorer for the Hoosiers was Jason Crist who crossed the line fifth in 25:50.6. Also finishing in the top seven for Indiana were Josh Roche (seventh, 26:05.7) and Owen Skeete (eighth, 26:07.6).
The Hoosiers will next compete at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet on Sept. 19. This year’s annual in-state meet will be hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette.
