BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a prolonged period of time, five years ago the Indiana and Purdue track and field programs started having annual dual meets. The Hoosiers swept the first four, but last year in West Lafayette Purdue had the upper hand.
The two squads will square off again on Saturday Jan. 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET at Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington.
The series, which dates back to 1910 have been largely dominated by IU, winning 25 of the first 32 dual meets from 1910-1972 when only the men’s teams competed against each other. Since 2010 when the meet started again on a regular basis there have been five dual meets with men’s and women’s teams and the Hoosiers have won eight of the possible 10 battles.
The Hoosiers are looking forward to the meet and are welcoming back several alumni of a program that has produced four national championships, 47 individual champions, 459 All-Americans and 14 Olympic Medalists. Any and all alumni are encouraged to attend and there will be an alumni event following the meet.
After opening the season by hosting the Hoosier Open on Dec. 12, the Indiana team had an intrasquad meet last week and continues the indoor season with the dual meet on Saturday with field events and running events both starting at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Junior Sophie Gutermuth won the pole vault competition at the Hoosier Open with a clearance of 4.22m (13-10), breaking the previous record of 4.21m by IU alum Kelsie Ahbe. The mark for Gutermuth was also a Gladstein Fieldhouse facility record and Hoosier Open record.
Also competing in the pole vault on Saturday is junior Sydney Clute. Clute finished fourth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships a season ago and in her first national meet, the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, finished eighth to earn All-America honors.
Sophomore Tretez Kinnaird, the 2014 USA Track and Field Junior National Champion at 800m, won the 1000m run in a time of 2:23.84, the second fastest time in IU school history. Kinnaird also owns the second fastest time in the 800m outdoors, which he set at the World Junior Championships with a sixth-place finish in 1:47.13.
Two freshmen won their collegiate debuts as Jill Whitman won the mile in 4:57.75 and Daniel Kuhn won the 500m dash in 1:03.55. For Kuhn it was the third fastest time in school history. For Kuhn, his time is also the third best in the NCAA in the 500m dash.
