BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women's tennis team will host the IU Winter Invitational on Jan. 17-19 in the IU Tennis Center to kick off the 2015 schedule. Along with the Hoosiers, players from Abilene Christian, Marquette and Oregon will be competing in the event.
The weekend will consist of both doubles and singles play with no team score. Doubles play will consist of a bracket draw while singles matches will be pre-determined for the weekend. Play will begin at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday and then at 10:30 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday.
After a strong finish to the fall, Indiana is primed and ready for the 2015 season. The Hoosiers ended their fall schedule at the WMU Super Challenge in November and went 20-4 in singles play in that tournament.
Indiana has four seniors that have played a major role in the starting lineup throughout their careers in Carolyn Chupa, Alecia Kauss, Kate Klyczek and Shannon Murdy. Klyczek was IU's No. 1 singles player a year ago and has twice earned All-Big Ten recognition in her career. Chupa played the majority of last season in the No. 3 spot and won 21 singles matches. Kauss led the team in singles victories last year as she played the majority of the season in the No. 4 position. Murdy was in the singles lineup in 18 dual matches a year ago and was a regular in the doubles lineup.
The sophomore class for Indiana includes Paula Gutierrez, Mary Beth King and Kim Schmider. Gutierrez saw the most action among those three a year ago as she won 19 singles matches as a freshman.
IU welcomes three new faces to the roster in 2015 in freshmen Sarah Baron and Stephanie Smith as well as transfer Sarah McClean. McClean, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will have to sit out the 2014-15 season due to transfer rules. Baron, a native of Orlando, Fla., went 7-2 in the fall for Indiana. Smith went 4-2 for the Hoosiers during the fall slate and played in the Ohio Valley Regionals along with three of the seniors.
