BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women’s tennis team won twice on Sunday picking up 6-1 wins over Western Michigan and Eastern Illinois inside the IU Tennis Center.
Out of the gate, Indiana (3-0) took the doubles points from WMU (1-2) with Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy (No. 2) teaming up for a win before Sarah Baron and Katie Klyczek (No. 3) clinched the point for the Hoosiers.
In singles play, Baron won IU’s first singles match of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Western Michigan’s Anastasya Reshetnikova in the No. 6 match. Paula Gutierrez followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ella Perinovic at No. 3.
Murdy then clinched the team win for Indiana over the Broncos as she downed Labina Petrovska, 6-2, 6-3. Klyczek (No. 1) and Kim Schmider (No. 4) also won in singles play for IU.
In match two of the day, Indiana swept the doubles point to get things started against EIU (0-1).
Gutierrez gave IU its second point of the match with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win over Sephora Boulbahaiem in the No. 3 position. Mary Beth King then downed Eastern Illinois’ Kamile Stadalninkaite, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles match.
In the No. 1 match, Klyczek gave Indiana its second win of the day as she cruised in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kelly Iden. Baron (No. 4) and Schmider (No. 5) were also victorious against the Panthers in singles play.
"I am very pleased with how everyone stepped up to cover up all our injuries,” head coach Lin Loring said. “The ladies that played No. 6, 8 and 9 last year were playing No. 3, 4 and 6 this weekend. None of them played doubles last year and they all played doubles this year. The experience they got this weekend will make us tougher as the year goes on."
The Hoosiers will hit the road next weekend for a double-header in Cincinnati against the University of Cincinnati and Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 31 beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
