IU won at Nebraska on New Years Eve, 70-65, to improve to 4-2 when playing on the last day of the year.
UP NEXT
• The Hoosiers will host Ohio State on Saturday, January 10.
HEAD COACH Tom Crean
• Indiana named Tom Crean as its 28th men's basketball coach on April 2, 2008, and he is in his seventh year with the Hoosiers. He is 302-196 all-time as a head coach and in the last 3+ years, he has led IU to an 84-34 record, the 2013 Big Ten Championship and back-to-back appearances (12 and 13) for the Hoosiers in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1994. In 2012-13, he was named NABC District 7 and USBWA District V Coach of the Year. In the last two seasons, Crean has mentored three NBA Lottery picks which is tied with Kansas for the most among NCAA schools.
• Crean is the only Big Ten coach to mentor an NBA lottery pick, a National Player of the Year, a first team All-American, a first team Academic All-American and a Senior Class Award winner this decade.
• Since 2011-12, IU leads all major conference teams in field goal percentage (47.8), three-point field goal percentage (39.6) and 2nd in free throw percentage (74.3) and in free throws made (2,132). The Hoosiers are 4th nationally in scoring (77.3) over the last 3+ seasons.
• The Hoosiers 38.5 percent shooting from behind the 3-point line since the start of the 2010-11 season is the highest among major college conference schools in that time frame.
• With the win over No. 22 SMU and No. 23 Butler, IU leads Big Ten teams with 17 regular season wins over Top 25 teams since the start of the 2011-12 season. This year, IU had 2 of the Big Ten's 4 wins against nationally ranked squads in non-conference play.
THREE YEAR WIN TOTAL
• The Hoosiers 73 wins from 2011-12 to 2013-14 represents the highest three-year win total for IU since 1990-91 to 1992-93.
NUMBERS
• The Hoosiers are 6th in the country in scoring (86.4), 12th in effective field goal percentage (57.2)., 13th in 3FG percentage (40.8), and 15th in overall FG percentage (49.6.).
Tom Crean AT MSU
• IU Coach Tom Crean was a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State during the 1989-90 season under Jud Heathcoat and returned from 1995-99 to work with Tom Izzo. He served at various times as recruiting coordinator and, for the last two seasons, associate head coach. In each of Crean's four seasons, MSU's win total increased, culminating with a 33-5 season and a 15-1 Big Ten ledger in 1999. Michigan State later went on to honor Crean with a 2000 National Championship ring; even though he wasn't on the staff at the time and was the head coach at Marquette.
ODDS AND TRENDS
• IU has made at least 7 three-pointers in all 14 games this season. Last year, the Hoosiers made 7 three-pointers or more just 8 times in 32 games.
• IU is 12-10 in Big Ten road games since February 4, 2012.
• The Hoosiers made a season-high 13 three-point field goals against Georgetown.
• Freshman Robert Johnson has made 8 of his last 14 three-pointers in the last 4 games. He led IU with 14 points at Nebraska.
• Junior Yogi Ferrell has made 15 of his last 17 free throws over a 5 game period. He also has 19 assists and just 10 turnovers in that span. With 12 seconds left in regulation against Georgetown, he hit a three-pointer that tied the score and sent the game to overtime against the Hoyas. It was the second time in his career that he hit a game tying shot to force overtime. He also did that against Butler at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in December 2012. Ferrell has made 16 of his 35 three-point attempts in the last 6 games.
• Freshman reserve Emmitt Holt has made 19 of his 25 field goal attempts for a 76.0 field goal percentage. He came off the bench at Nebraska and had 6 points, 4 rebounds and a blocked shot in 13 minutes of action.
Sophomore Stanford Robinson came off the bench and scored 6 points in 8 minutes of the first half against the Cornhuskers.
• Freshman Max Hoetzel has hit 3 of his last 5 three-pointers.
• The Hoosiers have done a much better job of making the extra pass and taking care of the basketball. Last year, the Hoosiers were ranked 325th in assist/turnover ratio. This year, IU is 57th in the nation in that category at 1.25 per game.
• Sophomore Collin Hartman is shooting 57.1percent from the field, making 8 of his 14 shots in the last 5 games.
