BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana was unable to spoil Penn State's Homecoming, falling to the Nittany Lions 29-7. The teams were tied 7-7 in the first quarter before Penn State rattled off 22 unanswered points.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back on the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. Indiana (4-2, 0-2) looks to return to form against Rutgers (2-3, 0-2) Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Day of firsts: Redshirt junior Andrew Wilson carried the ball for the first time since 2013 at running back, finishing with 12 yards on five touches. Redshirt freshman Alex Rodriguez and freshman Mike Majette also picked up their first career carries, picking up six and four yards, respectively. At quarterback, redshirt freshman Danny Cameron made his college debut in the third quarter, entering to replace injured sophomore Zander Diamont. At linebacker, Chris Covington, who switched from quarterback to defense during the offseason, also saw his first game action.
Career-day for Oliver: Redshirt sophomore linebacker Marcus Oliver had a career-high 13 tackles, six solo, with a half for loss and a pass breakup against the Nittany Lions. It marked the second time he's had double-digit tackles, the first coming week one against Southern Illinois. Oliver leads Indiana with 47 tackles through six games.
D-line applying pressure: Thanks to two sacks each from seniors Nick Mangieri and Zack Shaw, Indiana finished with four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Over the last three games, the Hoosiers have accumulated 13 sacks and 23 tackles for loss.
Turnover streak ends: Indiana's streak of quarters without a turnover ended with a fourth quarter interception. The Hoosier offense went 14 consecutive quarters without a turnover up until that point, dating back to the first quarter against Western Kentucky in week three. IU has only three turnovers in six games.
Turnover margin remains favorable: Despite the interception, Indiana's turnover ratio remained in good standing with the help of a fumble recovery by redshirt sophomore safety Chase Dutra in the first quarter. Indiana's turnover margin remains at plus-9 on the season with seven fumble recoveries and five interceptions.
Third-quarter magic returns: In what's becoming an increasingly abnormal statistic, Indiana held its opponent scoreless in the third quarter for the fifth time in six games. The only opposing team to score on Indiana in the third frame was No. 1 Ohio State. The Hoosiers own a 58-14 scoring advantage in the third quarter this season.
Oakes' onside success continues: While on the topic of abnormal statistics, redshirt sophomore Griffin Oakes successfully managed to help IU recover an onside kick for the fourth time in five career attempts. Redshirt freshman safety Will Dawkins was credited with the recovery.
Coming home: Indiana returns to the comforts of Memorial Stadium this week for a Homecoming matchup against Rutgers at 3:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights gave No. 4 Michigan State a scare last week before losing to the Spartans 31-24.
Bloomington advantage: The return to Bloomington could be exactly what Indiana needs to break its current two-game losing streak. The Hoosiers have won four of their last five games at Memorial Stadium, the lone loss coming by seven points to No. 1 Ohio State in their most-recent game.
Getting healthy: Senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld and junior running back Jordan Howard, who have each missed time the last two games, are still on the road to recovering from injuries, head coach Kevin Wilson told reporters afterward. Both traveled to Penn State and were dressed on the sidelines.
