BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana is in the midst of a four-game losing streak that has consisted of close contests against Michigan State and No. 1 Syracuse.
Indiana lost on the road to the Spartans in sudden-death overtime after tying the contest late in the second half. While at home, the Hoosiers lost to the Orange by the final 3-1. Indiana was down 2-0 at the half and was able to cut the lead down to one goal, but a late goal from Syracuse put the game out of reach.
Coming off of those close losses, the Hoosiers remain confident. According to senior Sydney Supica, who recorded the highest single-game total in the Big Ten with three defensive saves, the team is taking the losses as a learning experience.
"We've now played against the best offense and defense in the nation," Supica said. "Looking back, we can see that we held them to their own and to a tight game. Just by seeing that, we know in the future beating a team like Syracuse is doable."
Playing these high-level teams is an opportunity that the Hoosiers embrace. Freshman goalkeeper Noelle Rother ranks third in the Big Ten in saves with 60. She said that she could feel the team's excitement on the field as they battled against these talented teams.
According to sophomore Taylor Pearson, there have been good signs in every one of the losses. She wants the team to focus on the positives and bring it into this weekend's games.
"We came out strong against Syracuse," the sophomore said. "We put up a good fight and if we bring what we did best in that game I think we will have a very successful weekend."
To get back to their winning ways, the Hoosiers have focused on working extra hard in practice. Indiana has worked on different patterns and changed up its press to be more aggressive in both the circle and all around the field.
This weekend Indiana has two Big Ten games with a road game against Ohio State and a home contest against Penn State.
The Hoosiers' mindset headed into the weekend is simple: Get two wins.
Supica said that these are both winnable games and believe if they continue to play Indiana style of field hockey and leave it all on the field, the Hoosiers can be successful.
A successful weekend is vital for Indiana as its tournament hopes are still up in the air. Two victories will help the Hoosiers' chances.
They've done it before, as the team won three-straight games prior to the current losing streak.
"We've been successful," Pearson said. "We can do it. We've just been in a funk the past couple of games that we need to get out of."
