BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back at the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-3, 0-3) will battle for the Old Brass Spittoon this weekend against Michigan State (7-0, 3-0) in East Lansing, Mich. on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Scoring outburst: Indiana's 52 points against Rutgers was the most the Hoosiers have scored in a game since dropping 56 points on Purdue Nov. 30, 2013. The teams' 107 points combined is the most an Indiana game has seen since Indiana and Michigan combined for 110 points on Oct. 19, 2013, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Receivers break personal records: All three Indiana starting receivers—Mitchell Paige, Ricky Jones and Simmie Cobbs, Jr.—broke personal records in receiving yards. Paige went for 126 yards, Jones was second with 119 and Cobbs rounded out the trio at 107.
Sudfeld's comeback: The receivers' numbers reflected a career-best performance from Nate Sudfeld. The senior quarterback set a career high in completions (32) and passing yards (464) while also tying career-highs in attempts (42) and passing touchdowns (4).
Blocked kicks: Junior defensive tackle Darius Latham blocked two Rutgers extra points for the first two blocks of his career.
Fuchs finds the end zone: Sophomore tight end Jordan Fuchs provided Sudfeld with a go-to red zone target, hauling in a pair of touchdowns. He scored his first TD of the season on a 6-yard reception in the second quarter before adding a second on a 3-yard catch in the third. Fuchs now has three career touchdowns.
1945 team remembered: The 1945 Indiana Hoosiers were acknowledged in between the first and second quarters of Indiana's game against Rutgers. The number 45 was painted on the sidelines in red on the 45-yard line to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Big Ten champion Hoosiers.
Coleman returns: 2014 All-American and Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman served as an honorary game captain.
Eyes on Sparty: Michigan State was a popular topic during post-game interviews. Wilson and nearly every player brought up the importance of beating the Spartans on Saturday before heading into the bye week. Indiana breaks its schedule up into four-game stretches, and the Hoosiers will want to close out the second of those stretches strong to create momentum heading into the final stretch.
Michigan State's Heroics: Just before Indiana's game against Rutgers went final, Michigan State won in one of the most unlikely ways possible. The Spartans overcame a two-point deficit to Michigan as time expired by recovering a fumbled punt and returning it to the end zone. On the play, freshman defensive back Jalen Watts-Jackson actually injured his hip, but not before becoming the hero.
Spittoon goes on the line: Speaking of rivalry games, Indiana will play for first of two rivalry trophies this weekend as the Hoosiers look to reclaim the Old Brass Spittoon. The trophy has been awarded to the winner of the Indiana-Michigan State football game since 1950. It was initiated by the junior and senior classes and student council in MSU and quickly became a long-time tradition.
