BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After enduring three straight losses, the Indiana field hockey team regrouped and strung together back-to-back conference shutout victories.
Indiana beat Ohio State on Friday 3-0, which was the Hoosiers first-ever shutout victory against the Buckeyes, and went on to beat Penn State on Sunday in a low-scoring 1-0 contest.
Putting together consecutive wins on the road has taught the team to play the entire game no matter what the score is, and has given the team the confidence to come out strong on the ball.
Being back on the winning side of things, head coach Amanda Janney has seen a more positive Hoosier squad throughout the week.
"They're working hard," she said. "They're having fun and it's a great way to be."
After a weekend filled with a strong performance from Indiana as a team, two of its players were named to player-of-the-week honors.
Kate Barber received the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week award after scoring two goals in the victory over the Buckeyes and an assist against Penn State. This was Barber's first-ever Offensive Player of the Week award.
After an offseason of hard work, Barber is starting to see the results.
"I've never gotten a Big Ten award," the junior said. "For me it's nice to see how all the hard work I put in this summer is starting to pay off."
Even though she is honored to receive the recognition, Barber believes that her teammates contribute just as much, and do not get as much credit as they deserve.
Barber has been a fixture of the IU offense throughout the season and senior Sydney Supica has taken notice of her play.
"She's been consistent for us," Supica said. "She's been consistent on both defense and the offensive attack. Her stick skills are phenomenal and she's the reason we've scored most of our goals this year."
Her teammate, freshman Noëlle Rother, earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award for the second time this season after recording her first two career shutouts that included 12 saves over the weekend.
Janney is a fan of how Rother can make the athletic saves, but is even more impressed by her ability to read plays and anticipate the shot that is coming her way.
Having a goalkeeper who can make the difficult saves is great for the team as it makes every game winnable.
"Some of the games are low scoring," Barber said. "It's really important to have someone back there with the confidence to save all the balls that come at them. She [Rother] has been outstanding for us."
The Hoosiers have another tough weekend ahead of them as they travel to Maryland and Washington D.C for their second consecutive weekend on the road. Indiana plays No. 6 Maryland on Friday, October 23 and on Sunday, October 25, the team will go against the Eagles of American University for their final away game of the regular season.
The matchup against Maryland will be Indiana's second-ever against Maryland, in a game in which the Hoosiers will be looking to get their first win against the Terrapins as they lost 8-2 last season.
But that was a different team under a different head coach.
Maryland possesses a talented offense, but the Hoosiers have seen their fair share of potent attacks throughout the season.
Janney states that her team is confident they have what it takes to make the game competitive.
"It's going to be such a good battle," Janney said. "Seeing what we did against Syracuse, to limit some of their attackers, makes us very confident headed into Friday's game."
