A look back at one of the most illustrious careers in IU Water Polo history
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As we anxiously anticipate the arrival of the 2016 Indiana Water Polo season, we will look back at some of the players and teams that have helped forge the program that it is today—one of the best in the nation. This week, we turn back the clock for the collegiate career of Shae Fournier.
Shae Fournier, hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, assembled one of the most illustrious player careers in Indiana Water Polo history from 2011 to 2014. In four seasons with the Hoosiers, Fournier set offensive and defensive records that received program, conference, and national recognition.
Bloomington Beginnings
Fournier made her Indiana debut in the 2011 season as a freshman, starting in 34 of the Hoosiers' 39 games. She made an immediate impact on both sides of the ball with 61 goals (second-most by a freshman in program history), 39 assists, 87 steals, and a team-leading 54 field blocks. Season highlights include Fournier's four games with four goals, at that point her career high; a career-best seven steals against California State Monterey Bay, four assists in a win over Marist; three goals in a CWPA Eastern Title win over Michigan; and four goals in Indiana's three games at the NCAA Tournament.
The freshman set a CWPA record with 10 player-of-the-week honors during the 2011 season, and became the first player in CWPA history to win all three honors (Offensive, Defensive, Rookie of the Week) in one season. She received the CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Year award, along with a Western Division All-CWPA Second Team honor.
Superlative Sophomore
Fournier continued to improve in the offseason, and returned for her sophomore year better than ever. Starting in all 37 of Indiana's games in the 2012 season, Fournier reached new heights by setting the long-standing single-season school record for goals with 95. She also led the team in steals (86) and field blocks (95). In 29 of those 37 games, Fournier scored at least two goals, including ten games with four or more scores. Fournier led the Hoosiers to a 28-9 record on the season, culminating with a six-goal, five-assist, nine-field block weekend in three games at the CWPA Eastern Championship.
Fournier received several honors at the end of the season. She was named to the ACWPC All-American Third Team, the All-CWPA Eastern Championship First Team, and the Western Division All-Conference First Team. She also notched five CWPA Western Division Player of the Week honors.
Rising Junior
By her junior season in 2013, Fournier was already etched into the Indiana record books. She led the Hoosiers to a 21-13 record, starting in all 35 games. She led the team in goals (66), steals (62), and field blocks (35) while also tallying 38 assists. Highlights from Fournier's junior year include two straight games with perfect goal conversion (eight goals on eight total shots), five steals and one goal in the Hoosiers' upset over No. 12 UC Davis, a hat trick in Indiana's upset over Hawaii, and a single-game school record of six goals against Notre Dame College. At season's end, Fournier lifted Indiana to their first Western Championship trophy with three goals, one steal, and two field blocks over Hartwick College.
Senior Stardom
Fournier entered her senior season determined to leave her mark on IU Water Polo and, in turn, NCAA Water Polo. The senior helped the Hoosiers to a 24-7 overall record, including a perfect 8-0 CWPA West record, on the way to the school's third NCAA berth. Fournier started in all 31 games for the Hoosiers, scoring at least one goal in 30 of those contests. Fournier led the team with 76 steals and 82 goals, the second-highest single-season goal total in IU history behind her 95 goals in 2012. She led Indiana through their dominating postseason run, scoring 14 goals, serving two assists, and recording 16 steals in the Hoosiers' Western Division Round Robin campaign. Fournier followed that with three goals, two assists, and four steals for Indiana's second consecutive Western Conference Championship, and a hat trick against Princeton for the CWPA Title. At the NCAA Tournament, Fournier totaled nine goals, seven steals, and one assist on the way to a seventh-place finish.
Fournier culminated her career with one of her best seasons, and has the accolades to show for it. Fournier was named the 2014 CWPA Player of the Year, a Second Team NCAA-All American, and a First Team Academic All-American. She also received First Team All-Conference Honors.
Post-Graduation: The Present and Future
Fournier continued her water polo career after graduating in 2014. She currently plays for the Canadian National Team, which most recently earned a silver medal at the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto. Fournier, along with her former IU teammate and current national teammate, Jakie Köhli, are headed to play for the UWA Torpedoes in Perth, Australia. The continuation of their professional careers will help prepare Fournier and Köhli for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
