BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 1-0, on Saturday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana improves to 9-4-1 on the season overall and to 2-3-1 in Big Ten conference play with the victory. With the loss, Michigan falls to 7-4-3 on the year and to 2-3-1 in league action.
With the win, Indiana becomes the first men's soccer program in Big Ten history to win 100 regular season conference matches. The team also inched closer to the 700-win milestone on Saturday, posting the 699th victory in school history.
For the Hoosiers, Grant Lillard scored his fourth goal of the season to lead IU to the victory. Matt Foldesy and Femi Hollinger-Janzen each had an assist on the goal for IU.
Once again, the Indiana defense was outstanding, as goalkeeper Colin Webb recorded his Big Ten-leading seventh shutout of the season, making a pair of saves. The shutout is the 17th for Webb in his career.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Wolverines on a terrific team goal in the 18th minute. On a corner kick from Tanner Thompson, the ball fell in the 18-yard box to Foldesy, who found Hollinger-Janzen on the far right side of the box. The senior crossed a beautiful ball to the back post, finding an unmarked Lillard who lunged and finished with a great header to give IU a 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers had the better of the chances in the first 45 minutes. In the 25th minute, IU had a free kick from 29 yards out, just right of center. Freshman Andrew Gutman struck a nice-looking shot, but his attempt at goal was saved.
In the 32nd minute, Hollinger-Janzen hit a measured curler to the far right post from the top left corner of the box, but his shot was saved on a dive on a great great effort from the Michigan goalkeeper.
At halftime, Indiana led the Wolverines, 1-0. The Hoosiers out-shot Michigan, 10-5, with IU getting five shots on goal to none for UM. Corner kicks were even at 2-2.
In the second half, the Hoosier defense and Webb continued to make life difficult for the Michigan offense.
The Wolverines were able to get just four shots off in the final half, with two getting on frame. Webb made a great save for the Hoosiers on a bouncing shot in the 78th minute and then another at the near post on a potential equalizer with just two minutes left in the match.
The Hoosier defense held and IU claimed a 1-0 win over the Wolverines, pushing the team's record to 6-1-1 in the last eight matches.
With the victory, Indiana moves up in the Big Ten standings with seven points on the season. IU is just three points behind current league-leader Ohio State, two points behind three teams with nine points and one point behind three other teams with eight in a crowded Big Ten table.
The Indiana Hoosiers will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 31 when the team welcomes the Wisconsin Badgers on Senior Day at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
