BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped its final game of the season to Purdue on Wednesday evening, 2-0. The loss is the first to Purdue since the 2011 season.
The Boilermakers struck early as Erika Arkans fired a shot in the seventh minute that ricocheted off the hands of goalkeeper Sarah Stone. Maddy Williams assisted on the score for Purdue.
With only five shots combined between the teams, the first half was a battle between the backlines. With a save in the 27th minute off the foot of Arkans, Stone made her 200th career save and finishes her Indiana career fourth all-time in career saves with 201.
Sophomore Kayla Smith fired up Indiana's first good look on an on-frame attempt in the 34th minute. However, Boilermaker goalkeeper Erika Yohn made the stop to keep the Hoosiers scoreless.
Indiana looked to even things up just before halftime as freshman Hanna Johnson got her head on the ball in the box, however it popped up and over the crossbar.
One of the closest chances for Indiana came on a fastbreak in the early going of the second half as Johnson looked to have Yohn beat. However, Yohn came off her line to pick up the ball before Johnson could put up a shot.
"At halftime we tried to sort things out through the midfield and I thought we put together a pretty good second half," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "But it wasn't enough. We certainly had our chances tonight and we just didn't finish them."
The second half saw the Hoosiers earn six corners, compared to none for the Boilermakers, giving them opportunities to get on the board. In the 80th minute sophomore Annelie Leitner sent in a corner to Smith who was in position but couldn't put her header on target.
Three minutes later, the Boilermakers earned a penalty kick on a handball call in the box, which Williams converted to make it 2-0.
Prior to the game, seven seniors were honored as they prepared for their final game at Armstrong Stadium – Stone, Emily Basten, Jessie Bujouves, Kailee Feinstein, Katie Greulich, Rachel Romero and Kayleigh Steigerwalt.
"These seniors were in their second semester of freshmen year when we got here – 18 and 19 year-old wide-eyed kids," said Berbary. "I told them at the end of the game I can't thank them enough for supporting us and really helping us build this team's culture. I know this year it didn't show up in the win column but I really truly think those kids are going to look back and know they were a part of something special."
