BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana jumped ahead early and gave No. 1 Ohio State a scare, but a goal-line stand in the closing seconds was enough for the Buckeyes to hold on for a 34-27 win.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back at the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-1, 0-1) head back on the road this weekend to play Penn State (4-1, 1-0) Saturday at noon on ESPN2.
First loss: Indiana's undefeated streak ended at five games, dating back to last season. Indiana's five games this season have been decided by a total of 32 points.
IU dominates first quarter: Indiana may not have been in a position to pull off an upset had it not been for a dominant first quarter. The Hoosiers scored three of their 10 unanswered points to start the game while outgaining the Buckeyes, 114-36.
Mangieri provides pressure: Senior defensive end Nick Mangieri had a pair of sacks in the first half, a career-high, increasing his season total to five and his career total to 10. He stripped Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones on the first sack for his second forced fumble of the season, but the Buckeyes were able to recover.
Scales adds another pick: Sophomore linebacker Tegray Scales intercepted Jones at the IU 13-yard line and returned it to the Hoosiers' 45-yard line in the third quarter. The pick was Scales' first of the season and fourth of his career.
Dutra stays active: Redshirt sophomore safety Chase Dutra had a busy day, recording a career-high 11 tackles. His previous career-high was six (twice). IU's second-leading tackler was junior linebacker TJ Simmons, who had seven.
Paige to Diamont: Redshirt junior receiver Mitchell Paige completed the first pass attempt of his career to his quarterback, sophomore Zander Diamont. Paige picked up 16 yards through the air on a reverse in the fourth quarter, with Diamont making a route adjustment to haul in his first career catch.
Oakes remains quietly consistent: Redshirt sophomore Griffin Oakes converted on a pair of 34-yard field goals, one in the first quarter and one in the fourth. His two kicks made him 9-of-10 on the season and 22-of-28 for his career. His 22 field goals are tied for ninth in program history. He also added three touchbacks on six kickoffs and has 25 on 35 kickoffs this season.
On to Penn State: Head coach Kevin Wilson made it 37 seconds into his Ohio State postgame press conference before mentioning Penn State. All season long, Wilson and his players have talked about the importance of moving on after wins. The same can be said about losses.
Bouncing back: Indiana hasn't been in this position since losing to Ohio State last season. In 2014, IU responded to the loss with a win against Purdue at home.
PSU feeling good: There aren't many days off in the Big Ten East. Penn State has won four games in a row since losing to Temple in week one. The Nittany Lions defeated the Hoosiers 13-7 last season.
