BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 4-0 win over IUPUI at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 7-3-1 on the season overall, while IUPUI falls to 0-6-4 on the year. The four-match winning streak for the Hoosiers is the longest for the team since it won five-straight games at the end of 2012 en route to winning the program's eighth NCAA title.
Matt Foldesy scored his second goal of the season for IU, while Femi Hollinger-Janzen notched his team-leading sixth score in the win. Freshman Austin Panchot netted his first collegiate goal, while Phil Fives and Billy McConnell each tallied assists for the Hoosiers.
The Indiana defense was again stout, led by goalkeeper Colin Webb, who recorded his fifth shutout of the season. Webb made two saves while posting his 15th career shutout.
In the 16th minute, the Hoosiers broke through to take a 1-0 lead over the Jaguars. Working down the left flank, Fives cut through the IUPUI defense, leaving it off for Foldesy. The senior spun from 15 yards out, beating the Jaguar goalie to the low near post.
Coming out of the halftime break leading 1-0, Indiana wasted little time extending its lead. On the attack, Rees Wedderburn cracked a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was blocked. The rebound came right back to Wedderburn, who charged at goal, but was dragged down in the box by an IUPUI defender to draw a penalty kick for the Hoosiers.
Hollinger-Janzen stepped to the spot and converted, pushing the Indiana lead over IUPUI to 2-0 in the 48th minute.
In the 79th minute, IU's Andrew Gutman made a great run down the left side of the pitch, playing a dangerous cross inside the IUPUI box. The cross was deflected by the Jaguars' goalkeeper off one of his own players for an own goal, extending the Indiana lead to 3-0.
The Hoosiers rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute, when McConnell sent a cross from the right side of the pitch in to the box. The ball found the head of Panchot, who buried his first collegiate goal to the far post from 10 yards out.
For the game, Indiana out-shot the Jaguars, 24-6, getting 11 shots on goal to just two for IUPUI. The Hoosiers also held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
Individually, Wedderburn had one of his finest matches as a Hoosier, taking a game-high six shots, getting three on-frame. Hollinger-Janzen and Phil Fives each had four shots for Indiana in the win.
The Indiana University men's soccer team will host the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The match will also be broadcast live on BTN Plus.
