Assembly Hall Improvements on Schedule; Fans Asked for Patience During Construction
11/12/2015 5:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- With the regular season set to tipoff tomorrow, Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass today announced that construction that will preserve the best home court advantage in college basketball and greatly improve the fan experience at Assembly Hall is on schedule. While this dramatic refurbishment of the historic Assembly Hall will make attending IU basketball games more enjoyable than ever before starting next basketball season (2016-2017), in the meantime there will be considerable disruption inside and outside Assembly Hall due to construction. This disruption includes changes to the gameday traffic pattern, changes to how fans will enter and depart zoned parking lots, and how fans will be able to access and get around Assembly Hall on gamedays.
Improvements to Assembly Hall will include the construction of a grand new entryway and dramatic atrium in the South Lobby; remodeling all bathrooms and adding additional bathrooms, (including 114 toilets bringing the total to 298, a 61% increase); remodeling all concession stands; replacing the South Lobby ramps with escalators; adding escalators to the North Lobby; refurbishing all of the non-bleachered seats; replacing the current bifurcated scoreboard with a new, modern jumbotron; upgrading the building's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and similar infrastructure; adding a premium seating and hospitality area; building out a home for the state-of-the-art Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology; celebrating the tradition and success of IU basketball through branding, graphics, and imagery throughout Assembly Hall; and establishing a new Hall of Fame Portrait Gallery. Throughout the season, contractors will be working to ready the refurbished Simon-Skjodt Assembly Hall for the 2016-17 season.
"While we are excited about the significant improvements being made to Assembly Hall that our fans will be able to experience next season," said Glass. "This season will be full of disruptions with little visible improvement. We ask our fans to be patient as we improve Assembly Hall so that the greatest home court advantage in college basketball can be preserved for another generation. We will continue to do our best to minimize the disruptions as much as possible."
