Monette Takes Down No. 7 Seed at ITA National Indoor Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Sam Monette rebounded from a first round defeat to secure a win against No. 7 seed, Nicolas Alvarez from Duke on Friday at the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
"I came into this tournament with a lot of confidence," Monette said. "After the loss yesterday I came back focused and found a way to win."
Monette beat Alvarez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
"My serving and forehand were much better today," Monette said. "I played really smart as I progressed through the match."
"Sam played a very clean match with great focus and execution," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "It was great for him to get this win against a top-10 opponent and the No. 1 player from Duke."
Monette and his partner in doubles, senior Daniel Bednarczyk were defeated 7-6, 6-2 against the No. 1 seed in doubles, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger from the University of Virginia.
Up next Monette will be matched up against Quentin Monaghan from Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket tomorrow morning.
