IU Track and Field Reaches out to the Community

Members of the Indiana Track and Field team took part in a community outreach project with the College Mentor for Kids program. This program has a mission of improving children's lives by encouraging education. The fifth and sixth grade students and their college mentors came to Gladstein Fieldhouse on Wednesday and Thursday to learn about team building and work ethic, and, of course, to have fun.
The IU student-athletes put the kids through some warm-up exercises before breaking up into four groups for some station work. The stations were: speed hurdles, high jump, sprints, and shot put. Each station lasted for about 10 minutes as the athletes coached the kids on the proper techniques of the events.
The coaches were enthusiastic and the kids fed off their energy. The shot put coaches encouraged the kids to yell as they threw the practice shot, saying the louder you yell the further the ball goes. The speed hurdle station showed the young athletes the power of teamwork as they competed in relays. At the sprint station the kids were taught the value of exercise and staying healthy. Finally, the kids enjoyed belly-flopping onto the long jump pit as the coaches cheered them on.
At the conclusion of the exercise portion of the day, the students sat with their mentors for a short journal session. They were instructed to write about what they had learned from the IU student-athletes as well as how the athletes balance school, classwork, and sports.
Coach Beathea hopes that this is the first of many outreach projects he and his team are able achieve this season.
