BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football took No. 15 Michigan to double-overtime before falling 48-41 on Senior Day at Memorial Stadium.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back at the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-6, 0-6) will head east to play Maryland (2-8, 0-6) in the first half of a two-game road trip to end the regular season. The Terrapins are coming off a 24-7 loss to Michigan State.
Another close call: Indiana's seven-point loss to Michigan was the Hoosiers' fourth single-score loss in the last six weeks. The Hoosiers' only Big Ten game that hasn't been within one score late was their 29-7 loss to Penn state on the road, where senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld and junior running back Jordan Howard were unavailable with injuries.
Rare overtime result: Overtime was a relatively new experience for Indiana. The Hoosiers' double-overtime loss to Michigan was their first game requiring extra time since 2010 when IU defeated Purdue 34-31 in West Lafayette to win the Old Oaken Bucket.
Howard back on top: After rushing for 238 yards against Michigan, Indiana's standout running back's 149.9 rushing yards per game leads the Big Ten. He jumped Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott, who averages 142.5 yards per game. Even with Howard missing the better part of 10 quarters with an ankle injury, his 1,199 total rushing yards is second in the conference, trailing only Elliott.
RB's go back-to-back: Howard became the 11th Hoosier to reach 1,000 yards in a season and is 12th on the program's all-time single-season list with 1,199 yards and two games left to go. Coupled with Tevin Coleman's 2,036-yard season in 2014, Indiana has back-to-back 1000-yard rushers for the first time since 2,000 (Antwaan Randle El – 1,270) and 2001 (Levron Williams – 1,401).
Turnovers Return: After not forcing a turnover against Iowa, Indiana got back on track with true freshman safety Jonathan Crawford's third-quarter interception at the IU 14-yard line. Crawford is up to a team-high three interceptions in his first season. The Hoosiers have recorded a takeaway in 15 of their last 16 games.
Another third-quarter shutout: Indiana outscored Michigan 10-0 in the third quarter in what continues to be one of the strangest trends this season. The Hoosiers have now blanked their opponents seven times in the third quarter and hold a 102-27 advantage in the third stanza in 2015.
Redshirt juniors on senior day: Fans in attendance for the Michigan game could have noticed a few redshirt juniors with another year of eligibility remaining participated in Senior Day festivities prior to kickoff. Head coach Kevin Wilson said not to make too much of that. He said Indiana treated the game more like a "family day" and that those players aren't necessarily done after this season. That's something they'll talk more about after the final game.
An unranked opponent: For the first time in more than a month, Indiana's weekend opponent won't be ranked. Maryland has struggled as of late, dropping seven consecutive games, including all six Big Ten contests. The Terrapins, like the Hoosiers, have at times been the victims of close contests. Two of their last four Big Ten losses have been decided by one score or less.
Still new to IU: Maryland, who joined the Big Ten before the start of last season, is still a relatively fresh opponent for Indiana. The Hoosiers and Terrapins have met on just three occasions. Maryland won last year's game, but the Hoosiers lead the all-time series 2-1.
Dangerous on punt return: Statistically, punt returns stand out to its Big Ten opponents. The Terrapins are by far the most efficient team in returning punts, averaging 18.2 yards per return. The next-closest Big Ten team in that category is Rutgers, which averages 14.6 yards per return.
Just two left in the regular season: Indiana's season is winding down with only this weekend's matchup with Maryland and the annual rivalry game against Purdue left in the regular season. The Terrapins and Boilermakers are a combined 4-16 on the season.
