BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kevin Wilson expects his team to be playing its best football Saturday against Maryland.
Not because of the opponent. Not because of any new wrinkles or strategies in the playbook, either.
His expectation is based on time.
"We're talking to our team about (how) the really good teams improve," Wilson said. "We keep playing good football. We've yet to play enough winning football. We keep saying that we're a good team. Well if you are, continue to improve."
Constant improvement has long been one of Wilson's talking points. He would argue the quickest way for a player to grow as a football player is to have the opportunity to play more football.
Wrapping up another week of practice, Wilson said he was pleased with the way his team continues to attack the days leading into games. Despite the growth Wilson sees in practice, the Hoosiers still haven't been able to prove their practice gains during games quite yet.
"We've been a good prep team, process team," Wilson said. "We continued to play good but still come up short. So we keep working on correcting things we think are correctable, trying to put guys in better positions. Keep planning games better."
Indiana stuck with a slightly altered practice format this week that Wilson implemented prior to last week's Michigan game.
The Hoosiers have moved their regular rest day from Monday to Thursday. The idea behind the move was to keep players' legs fresher later in the week while also giving them an extra day to prepare for the upcoming opponent in Monday film study.
The player review of the new schedule has been good so far. Fifth-year senior bandit Zack Shaw spoke highly of the additional rest on Monday, saying he felt like everyone was flying around with more energy on gameday because of it.
Apart from the change in practice schedule, Wilson said he shared an article on the value of "lights out football" that has been floating around NFL camps. He said the article talked about the value behind players getting adequate sleep on Wednesday and Thursday nights so they'd have more energy on Saturdays.
"We're trying to educate our kids on taking care of their bodies," Wilson said. "So we've got a schedule, but there's some things they can do."
Wilson has spoken highly of Maryland all week, saying Wednesday that the Terrapins schedule has been even harder than Indiana's. He said Maryland's 2-8 record is misleading because of the quality of competition the Terrapins have been dealt with from week to week.
Wilson said Maryland's improvement has been especially obvious in recent weeks. Against Michigan State a week ago, the Terrapins limited the Spartans' offense to just 262 total yards. The week before, they held Wisconsin to just 188 yards.
"This is going to be a tough challenge," Wilson said. "We're going to have to play our best game."
