CHICAGO, Ill. – Indiana hung tough early at No. 19 DePaul on Thursday night in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT, but 23 IU turnovers were too much to overcome as the Hoosiers fell 84-69.
Indiana (2-1) shot 54.9 percent for the game, but the turnovers led to 28 DePaul points and the Blue Devils took advantage of the offensive glass with 13 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points.
Both teams came out running up and down the floor as layups from Jenn Anderson and Amanda Cahill gave Indiana an early 15-10 lead midway through the first quarter. DePaul fired right back nailing back-to-back 3-point field goals to make it 16-16 on the scoreboard before IU took a 21-20 lead the quarter break.
DePaul scored the first five points of the second quarter, but back-to-back buckets from Cahill and a Alexis Gassion jumper gave IU a 26-25 advantage with 8:13 to go in the half.
The teams played back-and-forth the remainder of the quarter before the Blue Demons used a 10-2 run toward the end of the half and hit a layup at the horn to take a 42-39 lead at the halftime break.
The Hoosiers shot 63 percent in the first half as Cahill had 10 points at the break.
With IU trailing by four in the third quarter, DePaul scored eight-straight points to build a 56-44 lead with 5:09 to go in the period. A Cahill 3-pointer temporarily stopped the run before the Blue Demons answered back with a trey of their own.
Indiana cut the lead to 10 late in the third quarter, but DePaul nailed a tough jumper at the horn to lead 64-52 heading to the fourth.
The Blue Demons used that last second shot as momentum in the fourth quarter to put the Hoosiers away.
Cahill led IU with 15 points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks, two steals and two assists. She went 6-of-9 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-point field goals. Tyra Buss and Karlee McBride both added 10 points for the Hoosiers.
IU will next head to IPFW on Tuesday, Nov. 24 to battle the Mastodons at 7 p.m. ET.
