BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey defender Sydney Supica will conclude her senior season this Saturday in the 2015 Victory Sports Tours / NFHCA Division I Senior Game. The game will take place amidst the NCAA Championship weekend on Saturday, November 21 at 2:30 pm ET. It will give Supica another chance to don the IU uniform while playing in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Mich.
"Out of the 78 teams in Division I, not every team gets a selection, so it's a big honor that Sydney got selected for the Senior Game," said Indiana head coach Amanda Janney. "Sydney had a fantastic senior year for us. She is one of the best players in the nation with her level of experience and skill set. She'll give a good showing and represent our university well amongst a group of talented senior all-stars."
This season, Supica joined fellow defenders Kate Barber, Malia Fujisawa, and Nora Aucker to form one of the best defenses in the Big Ten. On the attack, Supica recorded three goals, including a game-winner against Penn State in the regular season. Supica also served a timely assist to Maddie Latino in the Big Ten Quarterfinals against the Nittany Lions.
Supica will go down as one of the best defenders to ever wear the Cream and Crimson. Her 18 career goals ranks ninth in program history, and her accolades include two All-Big Ten selections, two Big Ten Player of the Week honors, and a NFHCA All-West Region selection.
Supica's most notable trait is her knack for the ball, especially in front of goal. The senior holds the Indiana career record for defensive saves with 23. Supica also holds Indiana's top three single-season defensive save totals—eight in 2014, seven in 2015, and five in 2013.
"She's overcome a lot of adversity in her career, and it was really meaningful to see her step up and overcome the adversity," Janney said. "She plays because she loves the game, and you can see that energy and excitement in her style of play. She was one of the sparks that helped us in our success this season."
Supica will not be the only Hoosier taking part in Saturday's Senior Game. Indiana head coach Amanda Janney joins Central Michigan head coach Molly Pelowski as the coaches for the senior game.
