Candyce Schroeder concludes the series of blog entries detailing the Hoosiers' trip to Barcelona
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Water Polo team spent their Thanksgiving Break in Barcelona, Spain this year. The Hoosiers return from a one-week trip capturing the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Catalonian capital, while also playing a handful of exhibition contests against professional Spanish water polo clubs. Seven other members of the team recounted their experiences throughout the week.
In this final edition, senior center Candyce Schroeder reminisces on the team's time in Barcelona on the way back to the United States:
Day Eight: The Return Trip
"Although we leave Barcelona today, we will always have the memories we made this trip.
"We left the hotel around 8:00 am this morning to head to the airport. The bus ride was full of reminiscing the adventures that occurred this past week. Once at the airport, many of us did some last minute shopping, even though most of our bags were completely full already.
"The first stop on our way home is Amsterdam. This being our real first time to relax, most of my teammates listened to music and/or slept. Reflecting back on the week, we received an amazing opportunity to experience a different culture, from the buildings to the language, and the amazing food. Despite the differences and the language barrier, the Spaniards we played against shared the same love for water polo.
"We landed in Amsterdam and quickly made our way through the airport to make it on our next flight. You could tell this was the first time that some people were traveling abroad, as they stumbled through the customs questions. After getting some stroopwafels and Dutch licorice, we board our plane to Detroit.
"Chatting on the plane with everyone, our top four activities this trip include: playing international games, jumping in the Mediterranean Sea, our cooking class, and the stained glass at the Sagrada Familia.
"Landing in Detroit, it feels good to be back in the United States, but I'm missing Barcelona already.
"We finally landed in Indy, and I think we are all ready to sleep in our own beds.
"Overall, we learned about a culture different than ours, saw amazing architecture, and grew as a team.
"A special thank you to our coach, Barry King, and Barcelona for the memories. Until next time, ¡adíos!"
