Barber one of conference’s four unanimous selections
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Three Indiana field hockey players earned honors from the Big Ten for their outstanding performances this season, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. Junior Kate Barber was selected to the First Team All-Big Ten, while senior Sydney Supica and freshman Noëlle Rother picked up Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Senior Nicole Volgraf was selected as one of the recipients of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
For Barber, this is the first yearly conference honor of her career. The St. Louis, Mo. native adds this honor to her Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor she received earlier this season.
Barber ranked second on the Hoosiers in goals, assists, and points as Indiana's central defender in 2015. She dominated on set plays this season, recording six goals and five assists from penalty corners.
For the third consecutive season, Supica was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. The senior from Ann Arbor, Mich. led the Hoosiers in defensive saves this season with six, the second-highest total in a single season in school history. Supica now has the Indiana record for career defensive saves (22), along with the top three single-season totals in school history. On the attack, Supica served one assist and scored three goals, including game-winners against Penn State and Rutgers.
Supica adds this honor to her Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award, which she received on November 3. She will also take part in the 2015 Victory Sports / NFHCA Division-I Senior Game in her hometown of Ann Arbor on November 21.
Rother picked up a spot on the Second Team All-Big Ten roster after an outstanding debut season in goal for the Hoosiers. Rother played 1,285 minutes in goal for Indiana, recording 106 saves (3rd – IU single-season) and three shutouts (T-2nd – IU single-season). Her season save percentage of .768 ranks fourth in Indiana history.
Rother adds this yearly award to her four Big Ten weekly honors, a single-season school record. Rother earned three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors and one Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award.
Volgraf, who scored two goals in 17 appearances for Indiana this season, received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The honor is awarded to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Volgraf, one of Indiana's three captains for the 2015 season, adds this honor several honors throughout her career, including two Academic All-Big Ten honors, two NFHCA National Academic Squad selections, and a Big Ten Distinguished scholar award. Volgraf serves as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and is the Big Ten SAAC representative for Indiana University.
