The first indoor track meet of the season is now in the books. Coach Ron Helmer had said on Tuesday that he was interested in seeing how all of his young talent would perform under the pressure of a collegiate event. Many of the freshman stepped up in a big way.
Freshman Taylor Williams finished eighth in the 500m dash. In the mile run freshman Haley Harris and Kelsey Harris took second and fourth respectively. The 4x400 relay team that consisted of Kendall Wiles, Sydney Anderson, freshman Riley Egbula, and Williams finished below the previous meet record with a third place finish and a time of 3:46.83.
Freshman Treyton Harris placed fifth in the long jump and earned the praises of the coaching staff. Eric Bethea, also a freshman, took second in the triple jump. Willie Morrison placed second in the shot put in his first ever collegiate meet. Markevious Roach stole the show in the 500m dash by setting a new school record and setting the new low mark in the nation with a winning time of 1:02.88.
Coach Helmer was also intrigued to see how the upperclassmen would step up in their new leadership roles. The response in this meet gave the coaching staff much to be excited about for the rest of the season.
Andrew Miller placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 17.76m. Daniel Kuhn placed second in the 500m dash with a time of 1:03.20. That time is the third fastest mark in program history and the second fastest time registered nationally this season. Jordan Huntoon crossed the line first in the 1,000m run. In the 3,000m run the Hoosiers took the top two spots. Finishing first was Eric Claxton, followed by Mark Chandler. Senior Cornelius Strickland set a new career best in his winning effort in the 60m dash with a time of 6.75. That time ranks fourth best in the nation and fifth best in school history.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on January 9th when they take on the Tennessee Volunteers in a dual meet.
