BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - It took longer than she wanted and required overtime, but Amanda Cahill finally got her double-double.
The sophomore forward scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Indiana's 65-56 win against Samford on Friday night, marking her first double-digit rebounding performance of the season. Eight of her 19 points came unanswered to start overtime, all but clinching the nine-point win.
Double-doubles eluded Cahill through the first eight games of the season after having three by this point last season. Although she's said statistics don't usually weight on her mind, even she had to admit relief after breaking through.
"It's something I try to do," Cahill said. "Honestly, I probably should have had some earlier in the season, and that's probably on me, but it's always good and obviously helps the team out. It was a nice feeling."
Cahill picked an optimal time to heat up, scoring 11 of IU's last 19 points between the fourth quarter and overtime.
Her most impressive stretch came in the extra period where she opened on a personal 8-0 run to give Indiana more than enough cushion to hang on for the win.
"Once we hit overtime, we knew we really needed to kick it up a notch," she said. "We were just looking at different looks. I was lucky enough to make them."
Cahill gave Indiana a three-point lead two minutes into the overtime with a layup plus the foul before scoring five points in 27 seconds with a pair of free-throws and then a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer following a Samford technical foul to stretch IU's lead to eight.
Indiana head coach Teri Moren said it was only a matter of time before Cahill started to see shots fall. Even in the midst of an inefficient shooting night, the Hoosiers never strayed from feeding Cahill the ball in the post.
"We've seen those go in," Moren said. "We know what we're capable of, so it was nice in that overtime really trying to isolate her on the low block and get her going. It really felt like there was an advantage. Any time we can get her on the low block, we feel like we have an advantage just because she's so crafty when she gets the ball."
Through nine games, Cahill continues to lead Indiana in efficiency, usage rate, effective field goal percentage and rebounding, among other things, according to advanced statistics from wbbstate.com.
Cahill has been Indiana's most consistent rebounder and one of the most efficient scorers on the roster since stepping on campus two summers ago. Despite Friday's game being her first double-double of the season, she's been limited to single-digit scoring only twice all season and has only one game without seven or more rebounds.
Moren hasn't shied away from saying Indiana is at its best when the ball is in Cahill's hands. Even while playing banged up with stitches in her lip, Cahill proved why in overtime when Indiana needed her most.
"Our backs were against the wall," Moren said. "I don't like it and I know they don't like it, but it's good for us."
