BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Bowl week has arrived.
Indiana and Duke will square off in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday at Yankee Stadium in New York. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and ABC will broadcast the game.
In advance, IUHoosiers.com put a spin on its usual "Ten (More) Things" with "Seven Things To Know" heading into this weekend's game.
Playing 13 in 2015: Indiana's bowl appearance will be the 10th in program history and the first under head coach Kevin Wilson in his fifth season. The Hoosiers are 3-6 in their previous nine bowl games, most recently coming up short in the 2007 Insight Bowl. Although IU has never played the day after Christmas before, all three of the program's bowl victories came in the month of December.
How'd Duke Get Here?: The Blue Devils won six of their first seven games. Their bowl-clinching win was a quadruple overtime victory Oct. 24 against Virginia Tech. That win propelled Duke to No. 22 in the national rankings.
One Mutual Foe: Indiana and Duke aren't typical opponents, nor do they normally have similar schedules, but they did share a common opponent this season. Both teams won contests against Wake Forest on the road. The Hoosiers defeated the Demon Deacons, 31-24. Two months later, Duke closed out its ACC schedule with a 27-21 win over Wake Forest. Duke is 0-1 against the Big Ten this year, losing to Northwestern, 19-10, on Sept. 19.
Pinstripe Bowl History: The Pinstripe Bowl has been played five times since being established by the New York Yankees in 2009. Syracuse won the first Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 30, 2010, defeating Kansas State, 36-34. Penn State won last year's game, 31-30, against Boston College in an overtime thriller in front of a record crowd of 49,012.
Football Tradition At Yankee Stadium: "The House That Ruth Built" has had a longstanding tradition of hosting football games, dating back to Oct. 20, 1923, when Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0. College football returned to Yankee Stadium for the first time since the early 1970s when Notre Dame and Army renewed their rivalry on the diamond on Nov. 20, 2010. The old Yankee Stadium hosted one bowl game, the Gotham Bowl between Nebraska and Miami in 1962. The 1948 NFL Championship Game between the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts, dubbed "The Greatest Game Ever Played", was played at Yankee Stadium. George "The Gipper" Gipp inspired the phrase, "Win One for the Gipper" during Notre Dame's 1928 victory against Army at Yankee Stadium.
Trophies On The Line: The winning team is awarded the George M. Steinbrenner Trophy, named after the Yankees former owner, who made bringing college football back to Yankee Stadium a priority. The game's MVP is awarded the David. C. Koch MVP Trophy, named after New Era CEO Chris Koch's father.
Offense Aplenty: Indiana and Duke's offenses rank among the best in the nation. The Hoosiers led the Big Ten in total offense, scoring offense and passing offense. The Blue Devils weren't too bad themselves, ranking third in the ACC in total offense, fourth in passing yards and fifth in scoring offense.
