BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football registered its first touchdown in New York Monday afternoon, landing its brief flight for a week of football in the city.
Now for the tricky part.
The mix of practice and bowl sightseeing make for a busy few days leading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. New Era Pinstripe Bowl matchup against Duke at Yankee Stadium. The Hoosiers got a jumpstart on preparing last week to compensate for whatever they'll be missing out on in New York.
"We'll do some very light stuff at the hotel," head coach Kevin Wilson said before leaving Bloomington. "We've done the bulk of our game-planning. We'll work hard Wednesday and Thursday polishing, Friday's a walkthrough at Yankee Stadium, then the kick."
Indiana will practice at Fordham University, which Wilson said could take anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour to travel to for practice. The facility has both outdoor and indoor practice sites, but Wilson said he'd rather use the outdoor field as much as he can to simulate the weather IU will play in on gameday.
Because of the issues surrounding travel, practices aren't expected to be as intense as they normally would be in Bloomington. The Hoosiers will spend most of the week tuning up and dialing in for the Blue Devils, which they've spent the better part of two weeks studying already.
"It will be close to normal, but not a true normal," Wilson said. "I think with the traffic and other bowl activities, we can wear ourselves out."
Those bowl activities include a trip to Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday, ringing in the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and meeting with the media on Thursday and a visit to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum on Friday, among other things.
Players have already started sharing photos from their trip on social media and will continue to get the most out of their New York experience in the coming days. Many of the players are in New York for the first time.
All of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Pinstripe Bowl will lead up to Saturday's game on ABC. By the time the Hoosiers take the field, Wilson said they'll be ready to go as always.
"I really like where we're at," Wilson said. "I think we've done enough where we're going to give our guys a chance to have a little bit of enjoyment, but also get ready to have a good game."
