BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's players were in for a surprise when they walked into their locker room at Fordham for the first time. One of the spaces was already reserved for one of the greatest football minds of all time—Vince Lombardi.
Lombardi, best known for his time as head coach of the Green Bay Packers and being a Pro Football Hall of Famer, starred at Fordham in the 1930's where he was a member of the famed "Seven Blocks of Granite" team that was nationally acclaimed for its offensive line. His likeness and memorabilia from his playing days still display prominently among the lockers Indiana is borrowing throughout the week.
Lombardi's locker was just one of the many nuances of practicing away from home that the Hoosiers have had to juggle this week, albeit one the players seemed excited about. IU was back in pads Wednesday for the first time in New York getting ready for Saturday's New Era Pinstripe Bowl matchup against Duke.
"I liked our juice out here in practice," junior linebacker TJ Simmons said. "Everybody coming out here, everybody's focusing on getting this bowl win, trying to be bowl champions instead of just happy to be at a bowl."
Indiana kept the energy high at practice Wednesday and will be back at it again on Thursday before tapering off Friday before gameday.
The mild temperatures in New York meant the Hoosiers were outdoors at Fordham's athletics complex in weather more comparable to early September than the recent weeks in Bloomington.
"I thought it was a good go," redshirt junior offensive lineman Dan Feeney said. "We did a lot of thumping, got a lot of good on good work, which was good."
The return to practice only fed into the already high hype within the team heading into Saturday's game. IU will return to Fordham on Thursday for a mid-day practice session and try to keep the energy going late into the week.
"I just can't wait until Saturday," redshirt junior receiver Ricky Jones said. "I'm here to play football. This is why I'm here. New York is great and all, but I'm here to win and be a bowl champion."
Players Enjoy Comedy Club
Indiana and Duke met up Tuesday night at Carolines on Broadway to take in one of New York's most popular comedy clubs before getting into the grind of game week.
The Hoosiers and Blue Devils were on hand to listen to a handful of comics, including Hannibal Buress, who left an impression on Jones.
"Hannibal Buress—very funny dude," Jones said. "He had some very interesting things I probably couldn't say on camera. Very, very funny. He had the whole crowd laughing."
Indiana's own Donovan Clark did his best to keep the crowd entertained himself. The sophomore cornerback offered a slam poetry act that at the very least entertained his teammates.
"He gave a great poetry slam," Jones said. "Very funny."
IU Headed For Wall Street
Kevin Wilson, Fred Glass, Andre Booker, Anthony Corsaro and Nick Mangieri will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday.
The bell is rung at 9:30 a.m. to mark the start of the day's trading session and has long been an opportunity for celebrity guests to begin always busy days on Wall Street.
