NEW YORK -There was a little something off between Indiana's receivers and senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld on Wednesday.
A few too many passes were off target. Receivers were overrunning routes, playing a little quicker than they were at the end of the regular season.
Nobody was doing anything wrong, redshirt junior receiver Mitchell Paige said. Fresh legs from a few weeks off have only added an extra pep in players' steps that senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld needed an extra few passes to adjust to.
By the time Thursday's light practice at Fordham ended, Paige felt all the loose ends were tied. The only thing left is a walkthrough Friday before taking the field at Yankee Stadium against Duke at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
"We're all moving a lot crisper, a lot faster. I think we were more on the same page today," Paige said. "It's been a process, just taking these couple of weeks off, which has been awesome for us. We're moving faster than we were, and I think Suddy wasn't used to that. But we got better as the practice went on. We're in a good spot."
Thursday's practice was more conventional and followed a similar script to what Indiana is used to in Bloomington. Most of the day was spent polishing up plays and knocking any remaining rust off before gameday.
"Today was a lot of tuning everything up, trying to get ready for the game," junior defensive lineman Darius Latham said. "This was our normal practice format, the day where we kind of take the pads off and know our opponent. We had a lot of energy."
The rest of the week should follow a typical road game schedule. Indiana will travel to Yankee Stadium on Friday for a final walkthrough to adjust to the playing surface before any last-minute film study in the afternoon.
"We've been studying these guys for what feels like a while now," Latham said. "Very anxious. Just ready to get after it."
Kelley Kids Ring The NYSE Opening Bell
Indiana joined Duke to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday.
The teams were at Wall Street promoting Saturday's New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, where the Hoosiers and Blue Devils will meet for just the fourth time.
Head coach Kevin Wilson and Director of Athletics Fred Glass joined seniors Andre Booker, Anthony Corsaro and Nick Mangieri in ringing the bell. The tradition of ringing the opening bell dates back to 1903. It wasn't until 1995 that the New York Stock Exchange began inviting special guests to ring the bell on a regular basis.
"It was a pretty surreal feeling," Mangieri said. "I told my family about it, and I didn't really know it was that big of a deal, but then I started getting emails from family members I didn't hear from for a while about how excited they were to record it. It was awesome to see that part of Wall Street. There's so much history there, everything that goes on."
All three of Indiana's player representatives are finishing up their degrees at the Kelley School of Business. Wilson made a point of inviting them in particular to experience part of the business world they've studied.
"It's really cool because you hear about it, but it's kind of like putting a name to a face," Corsaro said. "It was a really cool experience. It just opened my eyes to a lot of different things. Being in the Kelley School, we have a lot of great professors and classes that show you what the business world is like, but being able to experience that at the pinnacle of the business world as a whole was really fulfilling."
People were watching, too.
Between the annual viewers on television and the thousands working on the floor, there were more than enough people watching the Hoosiers as they opened the day. Booker's family even made a point to record it back home so they'd be able to watch the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as a family later.
"The history behind it was awesome and an honor," Booker said. "They were saying I'd maybe be lucky to meet two or three people in my lifetime who rung the bell as well. It was really cool to be a part of."
