BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- After a sour ending to last season, the Indiana Hoosiers will start this year against the same opponent 2014 finished with against the Stanford Cardinal this weekend, Feb. 13-15. Per head coach Chris Lemonis, the Hoosier rotation will start Scott Effross (Friday), Christian Morris (Saturday) and Jake Kelzer (Sunday).
A LOOK AT STANFORD
D1Baseball listed Stanford as a sleeper to go to Omaha this season. Last year they were one game away from heading to the College World Series, but lost in the Super Regional Final against the eventual national champion Vanderbilt Commodores. Like Indiana, the Cardinal will lean on their strong returning staff to guide them. 90% of their innings logged in 2014 belong to players that are back this year, including their entire starting rotation. They will begin the year with reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Cal Quantrill on the hill, and likely follow with back-to-back lefties later in the weekend.
Offensively, the Cardinal lost most of their offensive production to either graduation or the MLB Draft. Zach Hoffpauir is their top returning bat after hitting .324 in 2014. The outfielder pulls double-duty throughout the school year; he’s also a starting safety for the Stanford football team. Tommy Edman, who ended Indiana’s season with a walk-off home run last year, is also back this season at the leadoff position.
BROADCASTING NOTE
I will be broadcasting IU women’s basketball until their season comes to an end, so Adam Cohen (@adamcohenIU) will handle the play-by-play duties this weekend. All three games in Palo Alto can be heard live on iuhoosiers.com by clicking here.
Last week, the final baseball radio schedule was set for 2015. Starting on March 20th at Penn State, every Friday night game will be aired on Hoosier Country 105 (105.1 FM in Bloomington). Alongside those games, Hoosier Country will also carry select midweek games on the airwaves, including marquee matchups against Louisville (March 24) and Notre Dame (April 21 at Victory Field).
