BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 52 Indiana women’s tennis team downed Marquette on Saturday in the IU Tennis Center, 6-1, to give the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season.
In double play, Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy of Indiana (7-1) teamed up to win at No. 3 over Marquette’s (6-1) Diana Tokar and Paula Tormos Sanchez, 8-3. Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek then clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers with an 8-3 triumph over Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner.
In singles, Indiana’s Alecia Kauss dominated Marquette’s Erin Gebes in the No. 2 match with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Klyczek blanked Ana Pimienta in the first set of her No. 1 match before rolling to a 6-0, 6-3 straight set win.
In the No. 3 match, IU’s Murdy outlasted Dawson 6-4 in the first set of their bout. Murdy then won six straight games in the second set to win it, 6-0, to clinch the team victory for the Hoosiers.
Smith won in straight sets over Marquette’s Sanchez, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 to give Indiana its fifth point of the day. Paula Gutierrez was also victorious for IU with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Vanessa Foltinger.
The Hoosiers will return to the IU Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 15 to take on 20th-ranked Notre Dame. That match will begin at 11 a.m. ET.
