HENDERSON, Nev. - The Indiana softball dropped their final game of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic on Sunday to Utah State, 6-5. Senior Shannon Cawley went long on two two-run home runs in the game to record a career-high four RBI. Cawley also hit a two-run shot in a loss to New Mexico on Saturday, bringing her weekend total to three.
The game began as a pitcher’s duel as only two runs crossed the plate for either team in the first 4.5 innings. Freshman Taylor Uden scored the game’s first run for the Hoosiers (2-8) in the top of the first off of a sacrifice fly by CaraMia Tsirigos.
Senior pitcher Miranda Tamayo (1-4) began her day with a solid outing, giving up just one run on six Utah State hits through four innings.
However, a grand slam by Nicole Arata in the bottom of the fifth would give the Aggies (1-7) their first advantage of the day, a lead they would not relinquish. An RBI double by Noelle Johnson would score another Aggie run as Utah State took a 6-1 lead at the end of five.
That is when Cawley went to work as she hit her first two-run shot of the game to right center field to bring in freshman Taylor Uden and cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the sixth.
Senior pitcher Lora Olson put up a stronger performance in relief for the Hoosiers, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and a walk.
After freshman Rebecca Blitz reached base on a single, Cawley blasted another shot to left center to cut the Aggies’ lead to just 6-5 with two outs. Next batter up, junior Michelle Huber reached base on a single, however Tsirigos would go down looking as the Aggie pitcher Noelle Johnson secured the win. Johnson pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on seven Hoosier hits.
Up next for Indiana, the Hoosiers head to Cathedral City, Calif. for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic as Indiana will face UCLA and Georgia on Thursday afternoon.
