CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Indiana softball team dropped its final game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday to BYU, 5-3. The Hoosiers were led by two-hit outings from freshmen Rebecca Blitz and Mena Fulton.
Neither team recorded a hit in the opening inning, however BYU (8-6) loaded the bases with just one out to start their second inning. An RBI single by Lacey Hofstedt brought in the first run of the game. Next batter up, Gordy Bravo hit a bases-clearing double to give the Cougars an early 4-0 lead.
The Hoosiers (2-13) quickly answered as sophomore Kayla Mathewson scored her second run of the year on a BYU error. One inning later, Indiana made it a 4-2 ballgame following a bases loaded walk that scored Fulton, who finished her day going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth as Bravo picked up her fourth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to score McKenzie St. Clair.
However, Indiana was not finished as freshman Taylor Uden led off the seventh with a double to right field, followed by a Blitz single. Uden scored on a fielder's choice from senior Shannon Cawley to cut the Cougars' lead down to 5-3 before a popout and strikeout ended the Hoosiers' rally.
For the second game in a row Indiana received an impressive relief effort from senior Miranda Tamayo, who gave up just one run on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
BYU pitcher McKenna Bull tossed a complete game for the Cougars, allowing the three runs on nine hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
Indiana will head to Orlando, Fla. next weekend for the Citrus II Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
