On the first pitch of the 11th inning, Craig Dedelow belted a home run, IU's third of the game, to center field to give the Hoosiers (2-3) their first advantage of the game, 5-4.
IU was one out away from a win, but Furman's Cameron Whitehead singled to right field to bring Blake Chisolm home from second, forcing the decisive 12th inning.
Chisolm's single up the middle with runners on second and third brought in Jake Jones for the winning run sending IU to its third consecutive loss.
Indiana fell behind, 4-0, after the third inning with Furman scoring three in the third on four hits and two home runs.
But the Paladins wouldn't score again until they needed to against two outs and trailing by one in the 11th as IU held Furman scoreless for seven straight stanzas.
Indiana got on the board in the fifth inning with three runs of its own. Brad Hartong singled, Scott Donley followed up with an RBI double and Nick Ramos hit Indiana's first home run to suddenly bring the Hoosiers within a run.
Austin Cangelosi's first hit of the season was a big one -- an eighth-inning home run that knotted the score at four and ultimately forced extra innings.
Furman had a chance to win in the ninth inning but Dedelow made a SportsCenter-worthy diving catch in left center to end the inning.
The Hoosiers loaded the bases after picking up two outs in both the first and second innings but couldn't score. Indiana left 14 on base, including 12 in scoring position.
IU concludes play in the First Pitch Invitational on Sunday vs. Xavier at Fluor Field. The game is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. ET, but schedule changes can be found first via @HoosierBaseball on Twitter.
