BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana track and field team travels to the Big Ten Indoor Championships this week as they prepare to compete on Friday Feb 27-28 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The meet begins both Friday and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. ET with heptathlon events. The meet will air tape delayed on the Big Ten Network on March 8.
This year marks the third straight year the meet has been held at the Spire Institute. The Hoosiers come in with a total of 27 times and marks that ranks in the top-10 in the conference and have six events in which they have multiple student-athletes in the top-10.
Historically the Indiana program has won 50 Big Ten team titles, most recently the 2013 men’s cross country championships and most recently in track and field, the 2012 men’s title. The Hoosiers have won 17 Big Ten Indoor Team Championships on the men’s side, which ranks fourth in the conference.
Last year Indiana claimed two individual Big Ten titles and two runner-ups. In the women’s pole vault, the Hoosiers went 1-2-4 and return Sophie Gutermuth, who finished second and Sydney Clute, who finished fourth. Gutermuth comes into the meet having broke the Indiana school record in the event (4.26m-13’11.75”). Gutermuth has the second best mark in the Big Ten this season and ranks 13th nationally. Clute holds the seventh best mark in the conference with a clearance of 4.06m (13’3.75”).
Sophomore Tretez Kinnaird, who finished fourth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in the 600m a season ago has the third best time in the 800m in the conference coming into the meet at 1:48.20. Kinnaird’s time set a new IU school record at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 7 at Notre Dame. Kinnaird is currently ranked 16th in the NCAA in the 800m.
Another place the Hoosiers will look to pickup points is the heptathlon, where Dylan Anderson is ranked third and Stephen Keller comes in with the fourth best point total in the conference. Anderson’s total of 5561 ranks ninth in the NCAA, while Keller’s 5437 ranks 16th in the nation.
