Kinnaird Earns Big Ten Championship

GENEVA, Ohio - Sophomore Tretez Kinnaird led from the beginning and sprinted home to win the 800m Big Ten Championship as the Indiana track and field team completed competition at the 2015 Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute.
Kinnaird, who earlier this season set a new school record in the 800m, won the race in 1:48.89 and earned the first Big Ten Indoor Championships for the Hoosiers since Jim White in 1988.
Two other Hoosiers earned spots on the podium with Stephen Keller and Rorey Hunter. Keller finished in third-place in the heptathlon with 5706 points, the second best total in school history. Keller is currently has the ninth best mark in the NCAA. Hunter, the Big Ten Outdoor 1500m champion last year, finished third in a tactical mile race in 4:11.99.
In addition to Keller, teammate Dylan Anderson finished fourth in the heptathlon with 5542 points.
In the team standings, the Indiana men finished in seventh-place and the women finished in 11th place.
In field events Nakel McClinton finished in fifth-place in the weight throw with a mark of 20.04m. In the high jump, Keller earned additional points for the Hoosiers with a fifth-place finish with a mark of 2.08m. Freshman Paul Galas finished eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.03m.
In the women’s 5,000m run the tandem of Jill Whitman and Amanda Behnke came back in a big way a day after finishing fifth and sixth in the 3,000m run. Whitman and Behnke finished sixth and seventh respectively in the 5K in 16:24.87 and 16:25.99. Those times are the fifth and sixth fastest in IU school history.
Freshman Daniel Kuhn finished seventh in the 600m run in a career-best time of 1:18.70. Also scoring points for the Hoosiers, Brenna Calder (4:47.12) and Josh Roche (4:13.37) in the mile. Senior Samantha Gwin scored a point for the Hoosiers with an eighth-place finish in the 600m.
Up next the Hoosiers will wait to see which student-athletes will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which take place March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Ark. The Hoosiers will open the outdoor season with the Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge in Tempe, Ariz., on March 28.
