PISCATAWY, N.J. -- Indiana's 19 turnovers proved costly as the Hoosiers fell on the road to No. 20/18 Rutgers in the regular season finale on Sunday, 71-60.
Rutgers (21-8, 12-6) outscored Indiana (14-15, 4-14) 50-24 in the paint and held a 18-0 edge in fastbreak points taking advantage of Hoosier miscues throughout the afternoon.
Tyra Buss led Indiana with 14 points as Amanda Cahill added 11 points for the Hoosiers.
The first half saw both teams trade scoring runs throughout starting with a 15-2 Rutgers run to build its biggest lead of the first half at 17-8 at the 12:30 mark.
The Hoosiers roared back beginning with a 3-point field goal from Karlee McBride and a Lyndsay Leikem layup. Jess Walter added a 3-pointer before a Buss free throw tied the game at 17-17.
Leikem then polished off a 13-0 Indiana run with back-to-back buckets to put the Hoosiers in front 21-17 with 7:33 to go in the half.
The Scarlet Knights rebounded with a run scoring seven straight to regain the lead before McBride silenced that spurt with a trey. Rutgers would end the half outscoring IU 13-5 in the final 6:22 to take a 30-26 lead into the break.
Both teams traded buckets to start the half before Rutgers pieced together another scoring run, this time at 15-3 spurt to build its advantage to 47-31. The Scarlet Knights would later open a lead of 19 points with 7:50 remaining to take control of the game.
Kahleah Copper led Rutgers with 24 points shooting 10-of-14 from the field. Betnijah Laney finished with a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards. Tyler Scaife also scored in double figures for the Scarlet Knights tallying 16 points.
Indiana will begin Big Ten Tournament play on Wednesday, March 4 against Penn State at 6 p.m. ET inside the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The Hoosiers will be the No. 12 seed and PSU is the No. 13 seed.
