COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Indiana University qualified a pair of men's and women's divers for the NCAA Championships on day one of the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Sophomore Michael Hixon and freshman James Connor will represent the men, while freshman Jessica Parratto and junior Lacey Houser earned spots on the women's side.
Hixon makes a return trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing first on the 1-meter springboard with a 12-dive score of 823.50. Freshman James Connor will make his NCAA debut after tallying a score of 771.60, good for third in the field. The top five finishers earned an NCAA spot.
Freshman Cody Coldren placed seventh with 661.05 points, while sophomore Joshua Arndt was 11th with a score of 637.80. Both could still dive in the 1-meter event at the NCAA Championships if they earn a spot at the meet tomorrow in the 3-meter competition.
In the women's 3-meter event Parratto earned her NCAA spot with a third-place finish, scoring 653.25 points over 12 dives. Junior Lacey Houser will make her first NCAA appearance after placing seventh with a score of 637.40.
Men's divers in Zone C have been allotted five NCAA qualifying spots on the 1-meter, eight spots on the 3-meter and six spots on the platform. Once you have earned one of those allotted spots, you can dive the other events at the NCAA Championships by placing in the top-12 in that event at the Zone C Championships.
As an example, Hixon and Connor would only have to finish in the top-12 on the 3-meter or platform this weekend to dive those events at the NCAA Championships.
The same rules apply for the women, who have eight allotted spots on the 1-meter, nine on the 3-meter and eight on the platform.
Qualification continues Friday with the women on the 1-meter springboard and the men on the 3-meter springboard.
