SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Indiana women's water polo team lost 11-5 to the No. 15 Pacific Tigers on Saturday night. Colleen McNaught netted two goals in the game to lead the Hoosiers in scoring.
McNaught was the only Hoosier with multiple goals in the game. Candyce Schroeder, Alexis Jones, and Jennifer Beadle also contributed with one goal each.
The Tigers were first on the board after scoring a five-meter penalty early in the first quarter. Indiana countered with a goal from Schroeder to tie the game at one goal each. Pacific increased their attack pressure after Schroeder's goal, rattling off three unanswered goals. The Hoosiers were able to get another goal, thanks to a precise shot from the point by Jones, but the Tigers grabbed another goal off of a turnover in the Indiana backcourt. At the end of the first, Pacific held a 5-2 lead over the Hoosiers.
Mary Campbell opened the quarter with a fantastic save on a Pacific shot attempt, but the Tigers scored twice on their next two trips down the pool. Another Campbell save gave the Hoosiers a chance to attack. Indiana took a time out to create a play, and McNaught delivered with Indiana's third goal. The Tigers increased their lead with two more goals to close the half. Pacific led Indiana 9-3 at half time.
Indiana struck first in the third quarter, a second goal by McNaught for the Hoosiers' fourth goal. The Tigers restored their lead off of a power play midway through the quarter. Beadle grabbed Indiana's fifth goal when her shot parried off of the keeper's arm and into the cage. A courageous save by MacKenzie Bonk ended the action for the third quarter, with Pacific leading 10-5.
Indiana went all-out on the attack in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers held strong and didn't concede a goal for the remainder of the game. Pacific scored the only goal of the quarter in the final minute, making it an 11-5 win for the Tigers.
The Hoosiers (9-8, 1-0 CWPA) have two games remaining in the Aztec Invite, and both will take place on Sunday, March 15. Indiana will take on No. 12 San Diego State at 12:15 pm, and face No. 20 UC San Diego at 5:45 pm. Follow @IUWaterPolo on Twitter for live, up-to-date news on the action.
