SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Hoosiers opened their Aztec Invite weekend with a 15-3 win over Whittier College, the top-ranked team in Division III Women's Water Polo. Shelby Taylor led Indiana with a hat trick in the game, and was one of five Hoosiers to score multiple goals.
Candyce Schroeder, Rebecca Gerrity, Sarah Myers, and Colleen McNaught each netted two goals for the Hoosiers. Kelly Matthews, Alexis Jones, Jennifer Beadle, and Sarah Young also got in on the scoring action, netting one goal apiece.
Indiana got off to a rapid start in this game, with goals by McNaught and Jones coming shortly after the first whistle. Young found the top corner on a counter-attack as the quarter was winding down. Whittier looked promising on a power play attack, but a great save by keeper Mary Campbell kept the score line at 3-0 at the end of the first.
The Hoosiers picked up where they left off in the second quarter. Gerrity earned a five-meter shot in the opening minutes of the second, which she sent home to give the Hoosiers a 4-0 lead. Taylor netter her first goal of the day off of a fast break counter-attack to make the score 5-0. Not long after their fifth goal, the Hoosiers put together the highlight play of the game. Taylor forced a steal, and then sent it to McNaught on the fast break. McNaught found Gerrity in front of the goal, and Gerrity sent it into the back of the net while blanketed by three Whittier defenders. The Hoosiers closed the half with a five-meter Myers goal and another Taylor goal to take a 8-0 lead at half.
Whittier came out a confident team to start the second half, and scored their first goal early in the third quarter. Indiana responded with a goal by Gerrity from two meters, but Wittier rattled off another goal on the power play. Schroeder retaliated with her first goal of the game to bring Indiana's lead to 10-2. Whittier grabbed their third and final goal of the afternoon to make it 10-3, but Indiana responded on their next counter attack. Beadle made the steal, sent it down the pool to Young, who found Taylor for her third goal of the game. Two more Hoosier goals by Myers and Beadle to close the quarter made the score 13-3 to end the third.
The Hoosiers grabbed two more goals in the final quarter. The first was another goal from Schroeder with the assist credited to Gerrity early in the fourth; the second, a precision strike from McNaught on the wing. At the final whistle, Indiana took the game by a score of 15-3 over Whittier.
Up next, the Hoosiers take on the No. 15 University of the Pacific Tigers. The game will start at 7:30 pm at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif. Follow @IUWaterPolo on Twitter for live, up-to-date news on the action.
