BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind a seven-run third inning, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights defeated the Indiana softball team in the Big Ten opener on Friday evening, 11-5.
The Hoosiers (9-21, 0-1 Big Ten) did get on the board first in the game, plating a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Kelsey Dotson to score Brianna Meyer, who crossed the plate twice on Friday.
Rutgers (11-7, 1-0 Big Ten) quickly answered in the top of the second to take its first lead of the game on a pair of back-to-back RBI singles by Stephanie Huang and Chandler Howard.
However, the Hoosiers would respond in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs. Michelle Huber scored on a bases-loaded walk to Erin Lehman and then Kelsey Dotson cleared the bags on a double to center field as Indiana took a 5-2 lead.
A huge third inning by the Scarlet Knights would put the game out of reach as Rutgers plated seven runs in the inning, all of which came with two outs. The scoring was punctuated by a two-run homer from Jackie Bates to bring in Howard.
The Scarlet Knights scored a run in the fourth and sixth inning to seal the victory. Pitcher Alyssa Landrith threw a complete game in the win, giving up five runs on six hits.
Indiana and Rutgers will return to Andy Mohr Field on Saturday for game two of the series at 1 p.m.
