OMAHA, Neb. -- The Indiana men's basketball team fell to Wichita State on Friday afternoon at the CenturyLink Center, 81-76. Yogi Ferrell drained four 3-pointers and led the Hoosiers in scoring with 24.
The Hoosiers and Shockers played a fast-paced, high-scoring first half, and Indiana emerged the leader at halftime, 39-36. The game went back and forth throughout, but a 16-7 run by Wichita State near the middle of the second half sealed the game for the Shockers. The Hoosiers shot well from the 3-point line as a team, but struggled with their low post defense, which allowed 44 points in the paint.
Three Hoosiers posted double-digit scoring figures in addition to Ferrell. James Blackmon Jr. scored 14 points and a couple of three-pointers, followed by Troy Williams and Colin Hartman with 11 points each. Stanford Robinson contributed from the bench with six points and converted all three of his attempts from the field.
Williams was Indiana's defensive player of the game, snagging 11 of Indiana's 25 defensive rebounds along with two blocks. Robinson led the Hoosiers in steals with two. As a team, Indiana played well on the perimeter, holding Wichita State to only 2-of-13 from deep.
Indiana's biggest issue on defense was related to foul trouble. Three Hoosiers finished the game with four fouls apiece, which resulted in several of Indiana's key defensive players short on playing time in both halves. The foul trouble also allowed Wichita State 34 free throw attempts compared to Indiana's 20.
With that loss, the Hoosiers are eliminated from the 2015 NCAA Tournament. They finish the season with an overall record of 20-14.
