TEMPE, Ariz. - The Indiana women’s water polo team lost their game against No. 6 Arizona State, 12-5, on Sunday morning. Shelby Taylor and Alexis Jones scored two goals each to lead the Hoosiers on offense.
Colleen McNaught was the third Hoosier on the scoreboard with one goal. McNaught also led the Hoosiers with two assists in the game, bringing her total to six assists on the weekend.
Mary Campbell had a solid performance in the cage with four saves, three of which killed Arizona State power plays. McNaught led the Hoosiers with two steals, followed by Taylor, Candyce Schroeder, Summer Creighton, and Sarah Myers with one steal each. Jones, Myers, and Rebecca Gerrity converted shot-stopping blocks for the Hoosiers as well.
The Sun Devils opened the game with two unanswered goals, the first in the opening minute and the second on an Arizona State power play. Taylor skipped a shot in the cage just before the quarter finished, but Arizona State held a 2-1 lead after eight minutes.
Arizona State began the second quarter just like the first, grabbing two goals in opportune situations to take a 4-1 lead. Taylor scored her second goal of the game to cut the Sun Devils’ lead to two, but Arizona State responded with their fifth goal a minute before half time. The Sun Devils held a three-goal lead heading into the break.
The Hoosiers were first on the scoreboard in the second half, thanks to a goal from Jones served by McNaught. The Sun Devils closed the quarter with three unanswered goals, increasing their lead to 8-3 at the end of the third.
The Sun Devils scored from two meters at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Indiana responded with two consecutive goals from Jones and McNaught to make the score 9-5 with just over five minutes to play in the game. Arizona State eliminated Indiana’s comeback hopes with three straight goals to close the game. Arizona State took the game, 12-5, over the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers have one game remaining in the ASU Invite. They’ll take on the Redlands Bulldogs at 3:20 pm ET on Sunday, March 22. After that, the Hoosiers begin a CWPA conference stretch on the road against Notre Dame College on Saturday, March 28 at 12:00 pm. Follow the action on Twitter @IUWaterPolo.
