IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Freshman James Connor and sophomore Michael Hixon both earned All-America honors with top-eight finishes on the 1-meter springboard to highlight the first day of competition at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Hoosiers sit tied for 13th with 29 points
Connor posted a career-best 437.85 in the championship final of the 1-meter to finish fourth overall. Connor also finished fourth on the 1-meter at this pool at last month's Big Ten Championships.
Hixon recovered from a slow start to finish fifth with a score of 430.90. The highlight of Hixon's final was his last dive, an inward 2-½ somersault pike that scored 86.70 points.
Indiana finished 17th and just out of the consolation final of the 200 freestyle relay, with a swim of 1:18.08 from sophomore Anze Tavcar, freshman Blake Pieroni, senior Yianni Thermos and freshman Ali Khalafalla. That is the fourth-fastest time in IU history.
Sophomore Jackson Miller finished 30th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:17.78.
Senior Steve Schmuhl finished 22nd in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:44.26. Placing in 32nd in the field was senior Mike Hurley, going 1:45.11.
At his first NCAA Championships, Khalafalla placed 28th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.63. Tavcar was 44th, clocking in at 20.09.
For the second time today Indiana missed out on scoring its relay, finishing 17th in the 400 medley relay prelims as sophomore Bob Glover, junior Tanner Kurz, sophomore Max Irwin and Pieroni placed 17th in a season-best time of 3:09.09.
Competition continues Friday at noon ET with prelims in the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving for the Hoosiers.
