BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women’s tennis team continues its long road stretch this weekend with matches at Penn State and Ohio State to conclude a five-match road trip.
The No. 43 Hoosiers will battle No. 71 Penn State on Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m. ET in University Park, Pa. IU will then head to Columbus to take on No. 22 Ohio State on Sunday, March 29 at Noon.
Indiana is coming off two consecutive road Big Ten victories at Nebraska and Iowa last weekend. The Hoosiers are 11-4 on the year and sit at 2-1 in Big Ten play.
Last weekend, IU’s youngsters were key to its two wins as freshman Stephanie Smith won the clinching singles match against the Huskers on March 20 and then sophomore Paula Gutierrez clinched it for the Hoosiers against the Hawkeyes on March 22. Gutierrez leads the team in singles victories as she is 19-7 overall on the year with a 12-3 mark in dual play. She has played mostly in the No. 4 singles position as of late.
PSU is 4-2 so far in conference play and holds a 6-9 overall record in dual play. The Nittany Lions have won four of their last five matches, including wins over Illinois and Maryland who are both currently ranked in the latest ITA team rankings.
OSU has an unblemished 5-0 record in Big Ten matches so far this year and are 12-4 overall. The Buckeyes will host Purdue on March 27 before welcoming Indiana on Sunday. The doubles duo of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus are ranked No. 44 nationally this week for the Buckeyes.
