IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Led by the third top-four finish in as many events from freshman diver James Connor, the Indiana men's swimming and diving team wrapped up a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Hoosiers squad, with three freshmen, six sophomores a junior and three seniors, tallied 126 points, finishing second among all Big Ten schools.
The highlight of the day was the platform diving performance from Connor as he tallied a score of 514.80 in the final to take second place. That is the second-highest score in school history, just behind his 532.45 set at the Big Ten Championships last month. He is the only diver in IU history to score 500+ points with a six-dive list.
Connor was the only diver at the NCAA meet to make the championship final on all three boards. He is the first diver since Mike Collier in 1999 to finish in the top eight in all three events and the first since Mark Lenzi in 1990 to place in the top four on all three boards.
Sophomore Michael Hixon finished 25th with a score of 331.45. Hixon was a two-time All-American at this meet with a second-place finish on the 3-meter and a fifth-place finish on the 1-meter.
The Hoosiers' 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Blake Pieroni, sophomore Anze Tavcar, sophomore Sam Lorentz and freshman Ali Khalafalla posted a time of 2:52.40 in the consolation final to tie for 14th overall. That is the second-fastest time in IU history.
Indiana qualified for the consolation final of the 400 freestyle relay, coming in 14th in the morning swim as Tavcar, Pieroni, Khalafalla and Lorentz put up a time of 2:52.44. That is the third-fastest time in IU history, just off the school record of 2:51.45 the quartet set at last month's Big Ten Championships.
Tavcar placed 24th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.01. That is the third-fastest time in Indiana history and gives Tavcar four of the five fastest times in the IU record book.
Junior Tanner Kurz was a hair away from making the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke, placing 17th in a time of 1:53.38. That was just 5/100ths of a second off the 16th-place time and a new career best for Kurz by almost a second. Senior Mike Hurley finished 42nd in 1:58.38.
Senior Steve Schmuhl capped his Indiana career with a swim of 1:44.16 in the 200 butterfly, good for 29th overall.
